If you overwater a succulent, it will explode. And a free printable!

Please note I am not a doctor and this should not be taken as medical advice. I’m sharing my 30+ year experience with chronic illnesses and what I’ve learned along the way.

I’m a plant killer. Not on purpose, I mean, I don’t set out to murder plants, I just can’t keep them alive. Some people say that means you have a black thumb, yeah, I don’t even have a thumb. Well, I do, but … okay, you get the point.

We had a succulent and it had been a few days since I’d watered it and it looked like it needed a drink. Well, apparently I overwatered it because a few moments later I heard a “pop!” and the entire succulent exploded. Like all the leaves (or whatever they are) popped right off the plant from all the water I put in it’s little container.

Stay with me, there’s a metaphor here. I think.

So, a partially unrelated thing … I read an article about resolving constipation. (Yeah, I know, like my author bio says my whole life is TMI) And it said that you need to double what a normal person should drink. Whoever is in charge of deciding that decided a normal person needs 8 glasses of water a day. Or 64 ounces. But if you’re constipated this article recommended that you drink 16 glasses a day. Or 128 ounces a day. That’s a gallon of water. Every. Day. ONE GALLON. This article also said you can’t drink too much water. Well, that’s not true. Too much water can kill you just like a succulent. I don’t know if you’ll pop, though, I’ll have to look that up, but you can overwater your cells and it can kill you. It’s rare, but it can happen. Especially if you try to drink too much at once.

Water is absolutely essential to a human being. We need it to live. And if you are constipated you may need to increase your water intake to help your colon function properly. But for the love of ice cream, please don’t go from drinking one glass a day to one gallon. You will throw up. If you want to increase your water – start slowly. If you aren’t already drinking water every day, start with a goal of drinking at least one glass a day. Once you get used to doing that, add another glass. You will pee more and that’s normal. Your body will adjust and start using that water more efficiently and you will get thirsty for more. It’s how it’s supposed to work. There are so many dangerous detox programs  that have you drink a ton of water to start with and if you’re not used to it, it’s not going to end well. And detox is another story for another post.

Everyone wants a quick fix to a problem, believe me, I would love a quick fix since I’ve had IBS for over 30 years, but sometimes you have to go slowly. You can’t magically drink a gallon of water and have your poop issues resolved. But do try to drink some water, even if you can only manage one glass.

And don’t be a succulent. Although, that was mostly my fault.
